Osteopathic Manual Therapy in BC

It is important to distinguish between Osteopathic Manual Practitioners and Osteopathic Physicians. Osteopaths trained in the United States are physicians: medical Doctors of Osteopathy who can diagnose medical conditions and prescribe medical treatments. Osteopathic Manual Practitioners (found around the world,) are not medical doctors, but are highly trained therapists with four or more years of training.

Osteopathy remains an unregulated profession in Canada, despite being recognized in the UK, across Europe, and in many other countries. This means that just about anybody, with any kind of training, can claim to be an osteopathic practitioner in Canada...potentially leading to poor results and dangerous practices.

It is recommended that clients consult Osteopathic Practitioners who have training that meets WHO standards, such as members of Osteopathy BC and the Canadian Federation of Osteopaths. For more information, visit
